Hay-rake Coat Hooks

This coat hook design was originally commissioned by CASE Shetland who were looking for an interesting but practical storage solution.

The client are a multidisciplinary firm offering civil, structural and architectural design across Shetland. Since they take pride in working across sectors - in both industrial and domestic/rural settings, I wanted to express this in the commission.

With this in mind, I chose to combine oak salvaged from the construction of the Shetland Gas Plant with the hardwood teeth of a long disintegrated hay-rake, found on a croft in Fair Isle. The overall form was inspired by the hay-rake teeth - simple curves, allowing the reclaimed timbers to tell their own story.

I would welcome commissions for coat hooks based on this design - materials will depend on availability. Although I have used all the original hay-rake teeth, pegs can be turned from other wood.
