ARTICLE / RADIO: Straw and Lace Exhibition in Puffin Republic
I’m delighted to be exhibiting the Fair Isle Chairs project in Lerwick again, this time alongside a beautiful little display of Shetland knitted lace, curated by PhD student, Sophie Peng.
Sophie has been researching the similarities between Shetland and Estonian lace - the only two knitted woollen laces in the world. Shetland lace was listed recently as critically endangered, so this is a super opportunity to see two of
Shetland, and the UK’s, most endangered crafts under one roof. All we need now is a display of kishie making and coiled straw basketry, and we would have a full house!
To read more about the exhibition and live demonstrations, read this great wee article by Neil Riddle at Shetland News…. and interview with Sophie on Radio Shetland, Just before the 16 minute mark - enjoy!
The exhibition is in The Puffin Republic shop’s backroom gallery space and I will be around on Friday and Saturday afternoons giving live demonstrations of the unique Fair Isle knotted straw working technique. We also hope to host some craft experiences, with talks and workshops - accompanied by yummy coffee and cake from Cest la Vie cafe. Watch this space!
